People celebrates the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The People’s Republic of China was founded on October 1, 1949, at Tiananmen Square. The day was made a national public holiday in China on December 2, 1949, when the Central People’s Government approved the “Resolution on the National Day of the People’s Republic of China.” After the United Kingdom turned Hong Kong over to China in 1997, China’s National Day was also observed in Hong Kong on October 1.
The activities in Hong Kong’s celebration of the National Day include parades and political speeches. The government also sponsors events such as fireworks displays and concerts.
